Barry Smallwood
Barry Smallwood serves as President of Akima’s Emerging Markets Group, a portfolio of companies delivering advanced technology solutions to the Department of War, Intelligence Community, and federal civilian agencies. In this role, he leads efforts to keep Akima at the forefront of technology innovation, driving the development of mission-focused capabilities that help government customers solve complex operational challenges.
Before joining Akima, Barry served for 16 years with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), where he held several senior leadership positions, including leading the Office of Special Intelligence Systems Engineering and Development and later serving as Associate Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Information Systems. In these roles, he oversaw operations, engineering, and development, advancing critical technical capabilities in support of national security and law enforcement missions.
Barry has more than 30 years of experience spanning computer engineering, technology modernization, and law enforcement. He began his career in law enforcement, where he helped design and implement innovative technology systems to support mission execution. He holds a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering from George Mason University.
